Apple devices users should think carefully before buying.

After half a decade of transitioning from Intel chips to Apple Silicon chips, Apple has begun phasing out support for Macs using Intel chips.

On the last day of 2025, Apple added the MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020) to its list of classic devices. This was the last MacBook Air model to use an Intel chip, released in March 2020, before Apple launched the MacBook Air M1.

In addition to the MacBook Air, Apple has also added several other devices to its list of obsolete products, including the iPhone 11 Pro, Apple Watch Series 5 (all versions), iPhone 8 Plus 128GB, and iPad Air 3 models with cellular connectivity. The iPhone 11 Pro has now joined the list along with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which was already on the list. The 64GB and 256GB versions of the iPhone 8 Plus were added to the obsolete product list last year.

According to Apple's policy, a device is considered "vintage" five years after it is discontinued. These devices will no longer receive new software updates, but Apple will still provide important security updates, hardware support, and replacement parts, subject to availability. Therefore, if you intend to buy a device on the vintage list, you should think carefully to avoid potential problems when repairs are needed.

Notably, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are still on the list of devices supporting the latest iOS 26 update. Meanwhile, although macOS 26 Tahoe supports some Intel-based Macs, the newly added older MacBook Air models are not among them. This result suggests that the iPhone 11 series is unlikely to be able to update to iOS 27.

The latest update to the list of obsolete/vintage devices was released just one month after Apple added the first-generation iPhone SE to its list of obsolete devices, seven years after it was discontinued. Such devices will no longer be eligible for any software updates or hardware support.

Last year, several other Apple devices, including the Apple Watch Series 4, the 15-inch MacBook Pro (2019), the 15-inch MacBook Pro (2017), and the 11-inch MacBook Air (early 2015), also joined the list of classic and outdated devices.
